From then it has gone from strength to strength as a centre for trading, thanks to its location on the River Avon, and then the creation of the Floating Harbour in 1809, which kept Bristol viable as a commercial port until its closure in 1975. Now the port area has been revitalised as a centre for leisure, commerce, and residence, and is just one of the many reasons Bristol now has a well-deserved reputation as a foodie city, with a wide variety of cultural influences leading to everything from pop-ups, street food, and restaurants of all shapes and sizes, up to and including those in the Michelin Guide.

As members of Business West, Bristol’s Chamber of Commerce, who are themselves celebrating their bicentennial this year, we’re delighted to be once again bringing the Source Roadshow to Ashton Gate Stadium on Tuesday 27th June.

Although our trade show is a mere toddler when compared to these significant Bristol anniversaries, having only launched last year, we are proud to be continuing this city’s trading heritage, and to be doing so at such an iconic Bristol venue. The Source Roadshow brings a wide range of producers, hospitality and catering supplies, food service, and business services to Bristol. It’s a great opportunity for the hospitality industry to connect, network, and share ideas, whilst trying out the best products from the South West and beyond.

Visiting the show is free for trade buyers, and you can register to attend now. If you’d like to have a stand, then give James or Paul a call here in the office at 01934 733433 or email stands@hale-events.com.

And a lot of people have been reflecting on how to do things better. Not just for themselves, but for their businesses and for the planet.

We’re launching a new area at the show in June, called ‘Leading in Innovation and Sustainability‘ to help signpost both our visitors and exhibitors towards products and services that are looking at doing things in a more sustainable way, whether it’s by reducing waste and recycling better, using renewable energy, or promoting better practices in the work place.

You can find out all about it by clicking here, and if you’d like to get involved, whether you’re exhibiting or not, give us a call on 01934 733433.

Auction to help Action! https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/auction-to-help-action/ https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/auction-to-help-action/#respond Fri, 25 Nov 2022 16:10:14 +0000 https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/?p=7210 This year’s Hospitality Action Winter Online Auction will run between 28th November and 12th December, and the Source Roadshow is delighted to be supporting them.

In June 2022, the Source Roadshow arrived at Ashton Gate Stadium for the first time, bringing the best of the South West to Bristol’s food and drink buyers. This new trade show hosted 200 exhibitors showcasing food & drink, equipment and all the services a catering, hospitality, or food retail business needs.

Bristol artist Ollie Gillard of Gage Graphics was commissioned to create a large one-off piece of work for the show, representing the journey our food and drink takes from producer to consumer, which he finished live at the show. This impressive original artwork (approx. 3m x 2.5m) will be amongst the lots available at the Winter Online Auction.

The 2022 Winter Auction features some amazing money-can’t-buy treats for the special foodies in your life, whether it’s exclusive dining experiences in some of the nation’s finest restaurants, overnight stays, afternoon teas, hampers or golfing experiences. Every penny raised from the Winter Auction and Raffle will help hospitality families in crisis, many of whom face an uncertain festive season.

Hospitality Action is the national charity that offers help, advice, and support whenever times get tough for staff in the hospitality industry, to help get them back on their feet and enjoying the job again, or to prepare them for the next phase of their lives. It has been, and continues to be, a challenging time for the sector, and its work is more important than ever. It’s the perfect charity for the Source Roadshow to be supporting.

The Source Roadshow will be back in 2023, on Thursday 27th June at Ashton Gate Stadium. Visit bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk for show news, and to register to attend. If you’re interested in having a stand at next year’s show – call 01934 733433.

In September 2022, some of the Hale Events team were delighted to attend the Taste of the West Awards ceremony, the first since 2019, at the Great Hall, Exeter University.

It was lovely to reconnect with colleagues that we hadn’t seen face to face for more than two years, and we all enjoyed the most amazing canapés and lunch, all created by the university’s talented chefs, using superb ingredients from the South West.

John Sheaves, Chief Executive of Taste of the West.

However we were amazed, and surprised, by how many faces we didn’t know! We’ve been working closely with Taste of the West for more than 15 years and thought we knew their members. During the pandemic we honestly thought we’d done a great job staying in touch with our market. We had been busy throughout, emailing and making customer service calls and continuing to build our database. But the amount of change we have all seen in the last 2 years meant that there were a great many new faces and businesses, many of which had been set up during lockdown. It was fantastic, and we achieved so much in such a short time! We met new people, found out who had moved where, and re-enforced existing relationships.

Dinner in full swing!

OK, so we’re biased! We’re event organisers, and our income relies on getting together, so it’s no surprise that we believe that trade events like this are the best way to do things. It’s even our strapline – ‘Business to Business, Face to Face‘! However there were times during lockdown when we genuinely thought we’d see a significant shift to online events, and yet more disruption to our industry. So it was very reassuring to see that, while online sales were clearly a lifeline for many businesses, the only way to really connect meaningfully is still face to face!

Human beings are, by nature, social creatures, and it’s amazing for morale to look your colleagues in the eyes and connect properly in person. Some things you just can’t do online!

PS: Here are all the very proud 2022 Taste of the West Award winners – as you can see it was hard to get them all in one shot!

There is more to cider than scrumpy! https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/there-is-more-to-cider-than-scrumpy/ https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/there-is-more-to-cider-than-scrumpy/#respond Fri, 06 May 2022 14:27:21 +0000 https://bristol.thesourcetradeshow.co.uk/?p=6994 With cider sales on the rise, consumers are looking for more than sweet and sparkling, or cloudy and strong tipples to try.

The South West is justly famed for its reputation for the best in all things cider and perry. As the demand for artisan products with great provenance continues to grow, and customer palettes change, the expanding range of ciders coming out of the South West is ahead of the curve, and booming with new styles and flavours previously hard to find on shelves.

Our Source Roadshow will be featuring 11 of the best cider makers around and showcasing products that range from the traditional to the fruity, and to premium products that could replace the classic bottle of wine at your next BBQ or picnic.

For those of us of a certain age, thoughts of cider can conjure up some rather less than positive pictures of 2 litre bottles being drunk in the park, or bright yellow pints of potent liquid bought by the growler on a farm in rural Somerset, or worse still something homemade, and not made well!

However, cider has far outgrown its “cider I up, landlord” reputation with incredible new flavours and styles becoming increasingly popular. Seeing a gap in the market and the potential for increased sales, cider makers from small independents to huge cider mills are encouraging consumers to expand their minds when it comes to ways to enjoy cider. If you didn’t think cider was your tipple, you may well find that it is now!

Cider makers are using seasoned barrels, experimenting with yeasts, adding new and fresh flavours to their ciders and perrys and are also doing their part to preserve the heritage and tradition of the drink by maintaining orchards of rare fruit so generations to come can experience them. Whilst traditional scrumpy remains popular, choices range from this to single vintage sparkling ciders which could rival champagne for celebrating on a hot sunny day. There’s even a rapidly growing range of alcohol-free cider, perfect for those who prefer not to partake, or are driving.

These three producers you will find at the show perfectly demonstrate the changes happening across the market.

Devon based cider maker Sandfords Orchards have split their produce into four categories, lower ABV session, fun and interesting flavoured, traditional, and premium class fine cider, the perfect summer swap from wines.

Hawkstone, with their infamous investor Jeremy Clarkson, have been using champagne yeast to give their cider a new lease of life, as well as aging each batch in oak vats for six months. An excellent example of a modern twist on a traditional drink.

Thatchers, a titan of South West Cider, have been at the forefront of experimentation for a long while. With their lab on site and the majority of their apples sourced from the local area, they have been making cider on Myrtle Farm since 1908! Whilst championing the traditional, they have created many varieties of their drinks including a huge range of flavoured ciders, and even wine. They also provide recipes and tips for cider cocktails and food pairings!

Jess Sherborne from Sandfords Orchards said “The cider category has completely evolved over the last ten years or so and continues to do so. It’s more diverse now that it has ever been as the category continues to proliferate with the arrival of smaller, artisan makers offering exciting and accessible alternatives to the mass produced, mass market ciders that have dominated for so long. The premiumisation trend within cider continues to spread as consumers seek out fewer, better products and experiences, paying close attention to provenance. This is great news for cider makers like us.

Martin Thatcher, fourth generation cider maker from Thatchers in Somerset says: “Thatchers Blood Orange – our brand new cider that taps into the biggest flavour trend for this year – comes with the Thatchers expertise of crafting smooth and refreshing contemporary and traditional ciders for today’s market. Together with our longstanding heritage, we’re able to meet the choice of today’s cider drinker through taste, quality, provenance and sustainable cider making.

Come along to the show in June where you can meet these producers (and more!), taste their products and have a chat with their teams about expanding your cider offering!
